Some lessons are born from setbacks, and for Drew Merrill, that setback became his calling.
Based in Utah, Drew was training for a career in the military when a shoulder injury changed everything. “My dreams were crushed,” he admits, “but the next thought came to me — be the best armed citizen I can be and help others along the way.”
That mindset led him to become a firearms instructor, dedicating his career to helping others gain the skills and confidence they need to protect themselves and their loved ones.
“Being an instructor is an honor and a service I don’t take lightly,” he says. “My ability to teach effectively could mean the difference between life or death for a student in a defensive situation.”

For Drew, those moments of breakthrough are what make the work worth it. One student in particular had been struggling with their grip for over 17 years. “We tried a few techniques until something finally clicked. The smile that came after, that confidence, reminded me why I do this.”
Outside the range, Drew’s passion shifts from firearms to food. “You’ll find me cooking, baking, smoking, curing, frying — or probably burning something,” he jokes. “My friends say I’ve always got a gun in one hand and a spatula in the other.”

No matter the setting, Drew’s message stays the same: safety first. “People focus too much on the offensive line and forget we aren’t superhuman. We need to protect ourselves — especially during training.”
That’s why Drew trusts Hard Head Veterans gear: equipment built to take hits and keep you in the fight.
To Drew, being part of the HHV community means more than just using solid gear. “It’s about being part of something greater than myself, a community that values safety, trust, and passing knowledge to others.”
