Protective gear is crucial when you’re an active or training member of the armed forces or law enforcement, or a private security contractor. You never know what types of situations you might find yourself in. By nature of your position, you’re highly likely to come up against intense tactical challenges that require a significant amount of protection, and when that happens, you can’t be worrying about whether your protective gear is going to hold up and do what it claims it’s going to do.
To this end, it’s imperative that any piece of gear you’ve got on you – from your enhanced combat helmet to your body armor – has been tested to ensure that it is offering you the maximum amount of protection possible.
Proper testing is crucial for guaranteeing your safety when you’re using a ballistic helmet. Your ACH helmet is the barrier between your head (arguably one of the most vulnerable parts of your body, and one that you certainly can’t afford to lose) and the potential trauma that abounds in combat situations, including blunt impact, gunfire, and more. Think about it: Your ballistic helmet is likely going to be tested on the field, so wouldn’t you prefer that it’s gone through efficient safety testing before it ever makes it there in the first place?
Before they are sold, combat helmets should be subjected to a range of ballistic and non-ballistic tests that help assess their abilities when it comes to the prevention of penetration and deformation, as well as pad compression durability, helmet compression resistance, impact resistance, and coating adhesion durability. The testing requirements we adhere to here at Hard Head Veterans are standardized and regulated by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), which regularly publishes new and updated safety standards based on recent research around injury prevention and protection.
End users of protective gear always have a few different features they consider to be the most important. And while we certainly agree that style and comfort matter, the parameters around what constitutes an ideal ballistic helmet should always begin and end with safety. It’s why you’re purchasing a combat helmet to start with, and it’s what stands between you and potential dangers. Never buy a ballistic helmet that hasn’t gone through proper testing first, and if you do, know that you’re taking a significant risk with your head and with your life.
