At Hard Head Veterans, we believe in supporting those who protect and build our communities: the men and women who make safety, craftsmanship, and service part of their everyday work.
Through our annual Hard Head Veterans Scholarship Program, we’re proud to invest in the next generation of protectors and builders by providing financial support and top-quality safety gear to help them start their careers strong.
This year, we’re proud to spotlight Juan Rodriguez, recipient of the Skilled Trades Scholarship. Juan is currently pursuing his certification in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC) at Charter College in Pasco, Washington.
A Hands-On Calling
Growing up in Boardman, Oregon, Juan was always curious about how things worked—taking apart cars, electronics, and small machines just to understand them better. That curiosity eventually led him to HVAC, a trade that combines technical skill with tangible impact.
“I want a career where my hands-on work makes a difference in people’s homes and their comfort,” Juan shared.
“The best part of working with my hands is seeing immediate results, and that feeling of pride and accomplishment when the job is done.”
The Path Ahead
Juan’s training at Charter College has helped him build both personal and professional confidence. He’s eager to deepen his knowledge of electrical systems, diagnostics, and the evolution of modern refrigeration technology—skills that will not only make him a better technician, but also prepare him to lead in his field.
“This program has helped me gain confidence in my technical skills,” he said. “HVAC has a lot of knowledge that can transfer to other trades too. Professionally, it’s helping me build the foundation to start a solid career and, one day, run my own business.”
Why the Trades Matter
For Juan, the skilled trades aren’t just about fixing systems, they’re about creating something lasting.
“Skilled tradesmen are the foundation we rely on—buildings, energy, comfort, and safety,” he explained.
“Trades are a good way to build a stable career without going into massive student debt.”
That perspective perfectly aligns with our mission at Hard Head Veterans: empowering those who dedicate their skills to improving their communities.
Overcoming Challenges and Staying Motivated
Balancing school, work, and personal life hasn’t always been easy. But Juan has faced every challenge with determination.
“There were times I was exhausted, but I learned to manage my time better, take care of myself, and focus on what really matters,” he said. “Those struggles taught me discipline and perseverance, skills that are useful in any job.”
His long-term goal is to start his own HVAC business and mentor others entering the trades. Above all, he hopes to provide reliable service and inspire others to see the trades as meaningful, rewarding careers.
What the Scholarship Means
The Hard Head Veterans Skilled Trades Scholarship includes a $1,000 award and a premium Hard Head Veterans hard hat—a symbol of pride in your craft for those whose work can't fail.
“This scholarship means a lot—not only does it help with my financials, but it motivates me to do better,” Juan said.
“The hard hat isn’t just about safety. It represents pride in the kind of work I do and commitment to keep adapting no matter what problem we face.”
Investing in the Builders and Protectors of Tomorrow
Juan embodies what the Hard Head Veterans Scholarship Program stands for: determination, craftsmanship, and the drive to make a difference. We’re proud to play a small part in helping him achieve his goals and can’t wait to see where his career takes him next.
